Silvercrest by the Smith Metal Art Company jewelry box, Buffalo NY circa 1930. A heavy bronze box with four feet, the lid featuring a double seahorse emblem in cast bronze. The motif is similar to the work of E.T. Hurley bronzes who (as documented by Riley Humler in the American Art Pottery Journal) in fact had a relationship with the Smith Metal Art firm in 1930. No known items of Hurley work have appeared signed by Silvercrest, perhaps this is the first? Box with excellent verdigris patina and signed. Measures 8.25” wide, 6.25” deep and 2.5” tall. $650
