The Marshall Field & Company Craft Shop supplied “Arts & Crafts” objects for their Chicago department store. The store had originally opened a jewelry craft shop and after seeing the success of other “in-house” department stores like Tiffany & Company making household goods, the craft shop was opened in 1904. The earliest work mostly focused on fully hand made jewelry and objects, progressing into more formal lines of wares (similar to Tiffany Studios) with names like Norse, Hopvine, Athenian and Viking. The majority of these lines with various patina finishes, centered around large desk sets including heavy bronze inkwells, letter files, trays, letter openers, frames, bookends and rarer candlesticks. Marshall Field work is of exceptional quality and deserves more attention in the decorative market today.
