Dirk Van Erp bookends, San Francisco circa 1912. An exceptional pair of heavy hammered copper bookends, the front set with a riveted encased tile which appears to be slate stone or ceramic, the fronts with cut out floral patterns. These bookends are part of a small experimental group made around the time of his break with D’Arcy Gaw and were illustrated in the School Arts Magazine in January of 1913. This is the only known version of this design and construction to surface. These appear to have been lightly cleaned decades ago, fine aged caramel patina with a beautiful luster. Both signed with “closed box” marks showing the ghost of the Gaw name. Measure 5.75” tall and wide and 6” deep. $2,200
