New England Arts & Crafts vase circa 1902. This mystery vase has several attributes of various New England potteries; the glaze, the handworked leaves and the white bottom are strongly reminiscent of Grueby, while the clay and form speak towards Merrimac and Walley. The “W’ signature is similar to the WJW on Walley forms, perhaps early Walley? Or possibly a potter who worked at both Grueby and Merrimac? We have seen a handful of wonderful vases with the same white base with this W mark, no one has been able to confirm the maker. Despite this, the vase speaks for itself with the thick mottled green glaze and the hand tooled leaf pattern around the body. The glaze thinned around points on the leafs, adding extra texture and dimension. Excellent condition, measures 4.5” tall and 4.25” wide. $1,800
