Ludwig Vierthaler for Winhart & Co. charger plate, Munich circa 1904. Exceedingly rare & fine hammered copper and pearl abalone charger plate as seen in the period art journal Kunst Und Handwerk (see image). This is only the second version of this plate we have seen in over 30 years, a masterful example of Munich metalwork from the earliest part of the secession movement. Heavily inspired by oceanography; this example features swirling waves, bubbles and seaweed with hints of reflective light casting off shells. These early Vierthaler examples are similar yet each very unique in craftsmanship. The piece retains its original patina, moving from brown to deep reds around the edges, a typical trait of his masterful patina work. Signed with stamped box and script model number. Measures 7.5” wide & 1.25” tall. SOLD
