Ludwig Vierthaler school for Winhart & Co. copper crab charger, Munich Germany circa 1908. This incredible hammered copper tray features a central hand worked crab with mother of pearl “stones” surrounded by blue enameled coral. This charger was featured in KUNST UND HANDWERK in 1908, an article on the work done at the Munich Royal Academy of Art. The caption mentions Victor Surbek as the possible designer, with all the work crafted by Winhart & Co. This is clearly a design taught by Ludwig Vierthaler based on his sea motif themes used on his pieces for Winhart at this time. The tray is hand crafted, featuring six lobes around the edge, the central crab is completely hand worked as seen in the hammering details on the reverse. The enamel is worked in blue, white & yellow on the crab legs & antenna and the surrounding coral. Rarely seen on Winhart forms, a key feature on Vierthaler works, are the large & deeply embedded mother of pearl stones on the crab body. Vierthaler strove to include a part of the ocean in his work as a tribute to the influence on his designs. Mint original condition and patina. Measures 10” wide and 1.25” tall. SOLD
