Arthur Wesley Dow “IPSWICH” Lantern dated Summer, 1903. This traditional colonial lantern was taught as a case study form in Arts & Crafts schools across the states. This one is quite special. Arthur Wesley Dow began teaching his summer schools in Ipswich at the turn of the century and by all accounts, the peak season was the summer of 1903, where Arts & Crafts in America was really being born. This lantern was made at that summer school, as seen in the “Summer Ipswich 1903” punch work. The piece also features Dow-esque tall poplar trees spanning the vertical space of the lantern. Lantern has the original patina, has lived a life with some minor bumps & bruises, but overall in nice condition. Measures 13” tall without the ring handle and 6” round. A true Arts & Crafts historical artifact from the root of the movement. SOLD
