Ludwig Hohlwein Munich Secession iron candle box, Munich Germany circa 1902. A rare, large & impressive hammered iron box attributed to Ludwig Hohlwein and crafted by Josef Zimmerman & Co. As this piece is unsigned, this attribution is based on period images of other work (see below) - note the identical attached legs & feet to the clock, the ring handles to the jardiniere and the triangular arms on the chandelier. The box was designed to hold long candles, the box thus decorated with two candle holders at each end secured with heart motif straps. The legs are attached with large iron straps wrapping around the body and secured with ten rivets each. The lid is gently domed and the perimeter has an extra iron rim held together with sixty rivets! The handle is sublime, a large triangular iron strap riveted to the lid has a small end cascading over the edge which wraps around a hand hammered ring handle. The handle hangs freely away from the large iron body, giving a sense of lightness to the form. The interior was lined with a decorative hard paper lining which works wonderfully with the box. Original warm patina to iron. Measures 19.5” long, 7” tall and 6.5” deep at the feet. SOLD
