Charles Frederick Eaton candle sconces, Santa Barbara CA circa 1908. A rare and important pair of hammered copper double Eucalyptus tree sconces. Although unsigned, these show near identical design patterns as two signed frames. The general design layout, the bends in the trees, the Celtic roots, the horizontal lines at top all match in these objects. In addition, the California catalog for the Alaska-Yukon Exhibition in 1909 details Eaton’s object list including a Lily and a Eucalyptus sconce, one of these was likely the sconce exhibited at the Fair.

Each sconce unique but matching, depicting tall Eucalyptus trees, tangled roots at the bases, the trees thin towards the top giving a illusion of height and upper section showcasing stylized seed pods and draping leaves. The repoussé hammering with astounding workmanship, the background with large punched hammering allowing the design to explode from the sconces. The heavily hammered arms arch to hold large cups with flowering candle cups. Mint condition with original dark patinas. Each measure 15” tall and 8.75” wide. The finest California sconces we have handled. $7,500/pair

These were exhibited at “Metal Manifestations: Artistic Expressions in Arts & Crafts Metalwork” in The Gamble House from October 2 to November 2, 2025.
