Dirk Van Erp bookends, San Fransisco circa 1909. These are very early Van Erp bookends which were illustrated in two Pedro Lemos publications as seen in the images below. The material from this period is believed to have predated the shop mark, these are unsigned. If you compare the design and unique hammering on the raised portion, it’s nearly identical to the desk set objects seen in the period photographs, particularly the letter file. The other image shows a wide variety of early experimental bookends he produced, one on the left side crafted like these. An identical pair (design work) was exhibited and shown in the book “Arts & Crafts: The California Home” (see images below). The workmanship and hammering all reflect the talent of Dirk Van Erp. The rivets all go through the back plate, very heavy and thick copper, wonderful original dark brown patina. Excellent condition. Measure 5.5” tall, 4” wide and 4.5” deep. $500
