Douglas Donaldson & Cambridge Pottery lamp, Los Angeles CA circa 1912. Donaldson moved to LA to work with Ernest Batchelder after they met at the Handicraft Guild in Minneapolis. He taught metalworking at the Manual Arts High School in Hollywood where students would execute his designs, he would submit photographs of his and student work to various publications as seen below. One of his unique designs were these eight sided copper shades with small panels alternating between larger panels. The cut out design work is quintessential Donaldson, the large central stem ending in blooms with stylized leafs swirling in the smaller openings. Donaldson loved working with pottery bases and on several lamps, he collaborated with Batchelder on them. This base is a very unique and rare base by Cambridge Pottery in their matte green Otoe line. The heavy base is a squash form finished with eight vertical ribs, four holes around the top and rests on four square feet. A converted oil font rests perfectly in the opening, a strong harp supports the shade. Shade has replaced mica panels laid in with industrial tape, copper with original dark patina. Base in excellent condition, one flea bite to a rib, normal surface wear. Measures 27” high, base is 13.5” tall and 10” wide, shade is 15.25” wide and 11” tall. SOLD
