Douglas Donaldson mailbox, Los Angeles circa 1915. Although unsigned as most of his work was, this has every hallmark of Donaldson’s masterful design & craft workmanship. Comparisons can be made to known examples from his home & period images (see our Donaldson page) - classic cross hatching, the stylized perimeter of the flower, the leaf patterns, the curling & openwork at the bottom, the dot motif within the hatching, the leather tool hammering - all signs of his work. He was also quite generous (and a bit sloppy) with his solder work on the reverse of pieces, as seen here. The interior features an incredible iridescent blue glass set behind the open work. There is a working pin latch at the bottom which is used to “unlock” the box. Measures 10.5” tall by 6” wide by 2.2” deep. SOLD
